The paper describes the numerical multi-objective optimization of an innovative totally enclosed fan cooled induction motor having an unconventional cooling system. The optimization process has been implemented using FE 2D magnetic and thermal opensource solvers directly into a modeFrontier workflow.
Target of the optimization is to maximize the rated power keeping the same shaft height and heat removal capability of the cooling system, while containing the manufacturing costs. The FE 2D analysis is based on the iteration of time harmonic simulations. The results of the FE analysis are used to define a nonlinear equivalent
circuit of the machine thus its performance.
The overall thermal behavior of the optimized motor has been finally verified by means of a complete 3D CFD analysis.
